Faculty of Graduate Studies Empowers Postgraduate Learning Partners Through Advanced Data Analysis Workshop

Expert-led sessions provided in-depth, hands-on training in two of the most widely used statistical and data analysis tools in contemporary research. The SPSS sessions were conducted by Prof. W. V. A. D. Karunarathna from the Department of Accountancy, and Mr. H. A. H. Hettiarachchi from the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, University of Kelaniya, with a particular focus on data analysis applications relevant to the Master of Health Economics Degree Programme.

The R programming sessions were delivered by Dr. U. P. Liyanage from the Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo, conducted the session for learning partners of the Master of Health Service Management Degree Programme, while Dr. H. W. B. Kavinga from the Department of Statistics and Computer Science University of Kelaniya led the R programming session for the Master of Medical Statistics Degree Programme.

Recognizing the critical role of SPSS and R in modern research, evidence based decision making, and policy analysis, the workshops significantly enhanced participants’ practical skills and confidence in handling real-world datasets.
The programme concluded with the award of certificates for participating in learning partners, marking the successful completion of a highly impactful academic initiative by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The workshop stands as a testament to the University of Kelaniya’s continued dedication to academic excellence, innovation, and postgraduate capacity building.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS), University of Kelaniya, successfully conducted a comprehensive one-day workshop on “R Programming and Data Analysis Using SPSS” on 03rd of January 2026 at the Faculty of Computing and Technology premises, highlighting the University’s continued dedication to advancing postgraduate research and analytical excellence.
The three workshops were organized by the Board of Study in Multidisciplinary Studies, Faculty of Graduate Studies for learning partners of the Master of Medical Statistics (Batch 02), Master of Health Economics (Batch 01), and Master of Health Service Management Degree Programme (Batch 01). Nearly 200 learning partners physically participated in the workshop, while several others joined online through Zoom, enabling wider and more inclusive academic engagement.
