Programme Overview

The Master of Medical Statistics (MMStats) Degree is designed to equip healthcare professionals, researchers, and data analysts with advanced statistical knowledge and analytical skills essential for evidence-based decision-making in medical and public health contexts. The programme provides a comprehensive foundation in statistical theory, research methodology, and data analysis, tailored specifically for applications in medicine, epidemiology,and health research.

Participants will develop critical competencies to design, conduct, and interpret complex medical research studies, including clinical trials, observational studies, and health surveys. The curriculum emphasizes modern statistical techniques, including biostatistics, survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, and advanced computational methods, enabling graduates to derive meaningful insights from largescale health data.

By integrating rigorous theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience, the programme ensures graduates are thoroughly prepared to address complex challenges in medical research and public health analytics. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for entry to the degree programs, the applicants must fulfill one of the following criteria:

  • A Medical degree or dental degree recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

OR

  • An Honors/Special degree in the field of Statistics, Science, Technology, Economics or any other relevant discipline.

OR

  • Any other equivalent qualification accepted by the Senate of the University.

Admission is based on academic qualifications and performance at an interview. Applications open annually, and detailed procedures are available on the Faculty’s website.

The Master of Medical Statistics is a one-year postgraduate degree consisting of course work and an independent research project. The program blends theoretical instruction with practical application, including exposure to software such as R, SPSS etc.

Alternative Exit Option: Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Statistics upon completion of at least 25 credits.
