Master of Arts in Economics & Master of Social Sciences in Economics
1. Introduction:
The Department of Economics of the University of Kelaniya has been conducting Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Social Sciences (MSSc) degree programs since 1998. The courses have been prescribed according to the general regulations for postgraduate degrees offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya.
1. Master of Arts Degree Program in Economics by Course Work - One-Year Degree Program
2. Master of Social Sciences Degree Program in Economics by Research(Course Work + Thesis) -Two-Year Degree Program
2. Entry Qualifications: |
Master of Arts Degree in Economics (MA) Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 5 or SLQF 6) from a recognized university with Economics as a subject or any other academic or professional qualifications approved by the Board of Study, Faculty of Social Sciences and by the University Senate. Master of Social Sciences Degree in Economics (MSSc) Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 6) with a Class (First or Second) from a recognized university with Economics as the main subject or any other academic or professional qualifications approved by the Board of Study, Faculty of Social Sciences and the University Senate. |

6. Objectives of the Program:
The other objective of this degree program is to enhance the knowledge, critical thinking and strategies of postgraduate students to select and use the Economic tools which need to be employed in the areas of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and development approaches.

Master of Arts Degree in Economics (MA): Coursework + Research - Onsite Master of Social Sciences Degree in Economics (MSSc): Coursework - Onsite |
8. Time Duration: |
Master of Arts Degree in Economics (MA): Time Duration is one year. The programme is expected to start in January each year and end in December. Examinations are scheduled at the end of coursework, and continuous assessments are conducted throughout the programme.
Master of Social Sciences Degree in Economics (MSSc): Time Duration is two years. The coursework is expected to start in January each year and end in December. Examinations are scheduled at the end of coursework, and continuous assessments are conducted throughout the programme. Another year is allocated for the research. |
9. Evaluation Procedure: |
Master of Arts Degree in Economics (MA): The assessment structure is based on examinations (80%) and assignments (20%).
Master of Social Sciences Degree in Economics (MSSc): The assessment structure for the coursework is based on examinations (80%) and assignments (20%). The thesis is evaluated by two examiners. Additionally, research is reviewed by two reviewers continuously. |
