The University of Kelaniya celebrated the inauguration of the fourth batch of the MSc & Master’s Degree Programs in Biochemistry and Biotechnology on 26th of October 2024, marking an important milestone in the growth and recognition of this dynamic program. The ceremony was held at ITC Ratnadipa, Colombo, bringing together future students, distinguished guests, and academic staff members in a warm gathering. The event was graced by the Chief Guest Senior Prof. Kapila Seneviratne - Chairman,
University Grants Commission, Sri Lanka along with Senior Prof. Sudath Kalingamudali -the Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Prof. Jeewantha Premaratne- the Head of the Department of Chemistry, and Prof. Nimanthi Jayathilaka - the Program Coordinator. Their inspiring words and insights set an encouraging tone for the students as they embark on this academic journey. Several respected members of the academic staff from the University of Kelaniya along with visiting lecturers renowned in their respective fields such as Prof. Priyani Paranagama, Prof. Tissa Amarakoon, Prof. Renuka Attanayake, Dr. Chamila Kadigamuwa, Dr. Dulith Abeykoon, Dr. Jayangika Dahanayake, Dr. Thelma Abeysinghe and Dr. Nihal Attygalle were also present to honor and support the new cohort. Their participation highlighted the collective commitment of our faculty to advancing knowledge and collaboration in the fields of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. Representatives from the sponsors of the event and invited guests from tech industries were also in attendance, further enhancing the collaborative spirit of the event. Notable representatives from each organization, such as Mr. Wasaba Jayasekara, Managing Director Hayleys Aventura, Mr. Chinthaka Jayathilaka, Head of Strategy and Finance, S&T Interiors Pvt Ltd (Hayleys Group Company), Mr. Krishantha Pathirana, Head of Human Resources Haycarb PLC, Ms. Lankani Hettigoda, Director Research and Development, Hettigoda Industries Pvt Ltd, Dr. Isuru Dissanayake, E-Channeling PLC, Ms. Chathini Uduwana, Vice President People & Country Head at Typefi Systems joined to show their support and commitment to fostering advancements in biochemistry and biotechnology through this program. The inauguration ceremony was a vibrant and joyous occasion, filled with memorable moments that set the stage for the exciting academic journey ahead for the Batch 04. Students, guests, and faculty alike enjoyed a memorable day of introductions, entertainment, and opportunities to connect and celebrate.
Prof. N. A. K. P. J. Seneviratne, Senior Professor of the Department of Chemistry, University of Kelaniya, has been appointed as the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Sri Lanka. He assumed duties as the Chairman on the 18th of October 2024, at the UGC premises.
Senior Prof. N. A. K. P. J. Seneviratne has over two decades of experience in academia, both as a lecturer and as an administrator. He currently performs duties as the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, and was the former Chairman of the Research Council, University of Kelaniya. He also worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya from 2014 to 2017.
He graduated with a BSc (Special) degree in Chemistry from the University of Kelaniya in 1990. He obtained a PhD in Chemistry from Wayne State University, Detroit, United States of America in 1997. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of British Columbia, Canada in 1998/1999. He was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship from University of Leeds, United Kingdom in 2010. Furthermore, he was offered a Fulbright Fellowship from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, United States of America. Moreover, he was awarded the SUSRED Award 2018 in 2019.
Quality improvement of coconut oil, antioxidant properties of coconut oil and other edible oils, investigation of the potential of unconventional edible oils as sources of essential fatty acids, evaluating the effect of fatty acid chain length on fatty acid-mediated absorption of small molecules, evaluating the in vitro and in vivo effect of antioxidants on oxidative stress-induced macromolecular damage to assess the potential as food preservatives are some of his key research interests.

The University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Cambrian International Study Centre (CISC) in Bangladesh, celebrates an important achievement as the First graduate of the Postgraduate programs for Bangladeshi students, Mrs. Nahida Akter, has been awarded the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree. Mrs. Akter received her degree during the University’s 145th Convocation, held on 25th September 2024 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.
This landmark moment stems from an agreement initiated between the University of Kelaniya and Cambrian International Study Centre (CISC), Bangladesh designed to offer Postgraduate Programs specifically for Bangladeshi students. The partnership was spearheaded by the former Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Professor Ariyarathne Jayamaha, following an institutional review to extend the University’s academic offering to Bangladesh. This initiative reflects the University of Kelaniya’s commitment to expanding its international academic outreach and providing high-quality educational opportunities across borders.
Mrs. Nahida Akter’s accomplishment is a testament to her dedication and academic excellence. She successfully completed her coursework, met the rigorous requirements of the MBA program, and defended her viva examination. Her achievement sets a commendable example for future candidates enrolled in this international postgraduate collaboration. The awarding of the MBA degree to Mrs. Akter underscores the success of the partnership between the University of Kelaniya and Cambrian International Study Centre (CISC), and it reaffirms the University’s mission to foster global academic cooperation and contribute to the professional development of students from diverse regions.

The inauguration of the first-ever Master of Medical Statistics program in Sri Lanka, organized by the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University of Kelaniya was held on the 25th of August 2024, at the prestigious “Cosmic by Citrus, Lotus Tower" in Colombo.
The Master of Medical Statistics program, developed by the Board of Study in Multidisciplinary Studies, addresses the growing demand for skilled professionals in healthcare data analysis and interpretation. The curriculum is meticulously aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF Level 09) and International Education Standards (IES), ensuring graduates are well-prepared to excel in both local and global healthcare environments. Approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka in 2023, the program is designed to meet the highest academic standards.
Dr. Anura Karunarathne, Chairman of the Board of Study in Multidisciplinary Studies, warmly welcomed the gathering. Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, presided as the Chief Guest, reaffirming the university’s dedication to academic excellence and innovation, while Senior Professor Kapila Senaviratne, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, participated as the Guest of Honor, further emphasizing the significance of the event.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Secretary to the Ministry of Health, who emphasized the historical significance and evolution of medical statistics, highlighting its vital role in the healthcare sector. Dr. Mahipala also described the launch of this program as a landmark moment in Sri Lanka's medical history. Drawing on his global expertise, he expressed pride in witnessing the commencement of such a groundbreaking initiative in the country. He extended his thoughts on utilization of medical statistics as tool in the policymaking and reliable decision making, at the level of administration of the healthcare sector.
Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Ministry of Health, followed with an insightful speech that set an engaging tone for the evening. Senior Professor Chrishantha Abeysena from the Department of Public Health, a leading advocate for establishing the Board of Study in Multidisciplinary Studies and Master of Medical Statistics Degree program, provided valuable insights into the program. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. U.P. Liyanage, Academic Coordinator of the Master of Medical Statistics Program.
Among the distinguished attendees were Senior Professor Sudath Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, and Senior Professor Ariyarathne Jayamaha, former Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, who played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for this initiative.
