Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programs

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is offered by the following Faculties of the University of Kelaniya, under the auspices of the Faculty of Graduate Studies:

  i. Board of Study in Commerce & Business Management

ii. Board of Study in Humanities

iii. Board of Study in Medical Sciences

iv. Board of Study in Science

 v. Board of Study in Social Sciences

vi. Board of Study in Computing

vii. Board of Study in Multidisciplinary

viii. Board of Study in Digital Learning

PhD applicants should submit a research proposal to FGS. This will be directed to the relevant Board of Study and department upon consideration. Supervisor/s will be appointed by the Board of Study, once the eligibility of the candidate is accepted, based on the proposal and a presentation made by the applicant to the senior academics at the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The duration of study for a PhD is three years, with extensions possible, on recommendations by the supervisor/s. Progress reports need to be submitted to FGS via the supervisor, every 06 months.  Other requirements for the PhD are given in the guidelines, website and the letters sent by the FGS. Thesis guidelines are given to each applicant once the eligibility criteria are accepted. FGS encourages empirical research by its PhD candidates, so applicants should be prepared to conduct research, and not be dependent solely on library sources or other secondary material. The terms thesis and dissertation are interchangeable at the University of Kelaniya.

"Research and Innovations in Crisis Situations"

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Arti Kashyap

Dr. Arti Kashyap is an Associate Professor at IIT Mandi in the School of Basic Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. degree from IIT Roorkee in 1996. She has been working with IIT Mandi since its inception. She has guided 9 Ph.D. students and published more than 100 research papers in International Journals. Dr. Arti Kashyap was awarded Simons Associateship from ICTP, Italy in 2015. Very recently, she has been selected as one of the role models featured in the book “She Is: 75 Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM)”. The announcement was made by the Principal Scientific Adviser Prof. K Vijay Raghavan and His Excellency, The British High Commissioner, Mr. Alex Ellis in Delhi on 3rd March 2022.

The primary area of research of Dr. Arti Kashyap is the study of magnetic materials using the first principles approach and the use of big data technologies for various applications including material design. Apart from this, she has a keen interest in socio-technical research areas; specifically in the space where technological intervention can fulfil societal needs. Her work on the use of dry pine needles to contain forest fires has already been accepted as a viable solution and has shaped the policy of the Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh. The solution involves creating biomass fuel from dry pine needles which can also help generate employment by developing small-scale industries for natural resources. Recently, she also participated in the UT level consultation meeting in Jammu for the deliberations on the theme “Forests for Livelihood”.

Dr. Arti Kashyap is the Chair of the Women Centre Committee at IIT Mandi and is actively involved in promoting the girl students in science and technology field.

Welcome to the Faculty of Graduate Studies

FGS offers a variety of programs, ranging from postgraduate diploma level to doctoral level. Currently, there are over thirty five programs offered by the various Faculties and institutions, leading to a Master’s degree. Some of the courses are based only on course work, while others are based on research, and some others are a mix of course work and research. Course work at FGS means face-to-face teaching as in a traditional university. These courses are usually conducted during weekends or evenings, to enable people who are already employed to enhance their knowledge and skills. In order to be more accessible, FGS hopes to be in a position to launch distance learning modules in the near future.

Postgraduate study at MPhil (Master of Philosophy) and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) levels are possible in each Faculty of the University of Kelaniya. These programs tend to build on the skills acquired at undergraduate and Master’s levels. They involve an applicant being assigned to a supervisor for guidance in conducting research. The applicant and supervisor/s work together to achieve the objectives of the research program. If you have no previous experience in conducting research, it would be best to register for a Master’s level program before attempting an MPhil or PhD. This is because most Master’s level programs include modules on research methodology.
