1. Introduction: 

The Department of Economics of the University of Kelaniya has been conducting Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Social Sciences (MSSc) degree programs since 1998. The courses have been prescribed according to the general regulations for postgraduate degrees offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. 

1.  Master of Arts Degree Program in Economics by Course Work - One-Year Degree Program

2. Master of Social Sciences Degree Program in Economics by Research(Course Work + Thesis) -Two-Year Degree Program

 

2. Entry Qualifications: 

Master of Arts Degree in Economics (MA) 

Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 5 or SLQF 6) from a recognized university with Economics as a subject or any other academic or professional qualifications approved by the Board of Study, Faculty of Social Sciences and by the University Senate.

Master of Social Sciences Degree in Economics (MSSc)  

Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 6) with a Class (First or Second) from a recognized university with Economics as the main subject or any other academic or professional qualifications approved by the Board of Study, Faculty of Social Sciences and the University Senate.

6. Objectives of the Program:

The other objective of this degree program is to enhance the knowledge, critical thinking and strategies of postgraduate students to select and use the Economic tools which need to be employed in the areas of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and development approaches.

8. Time Duration:

Master of Arts Degree in Economics (MA):

Time Duration is one year.

The programme is expected to start in January each year and end in December. Examinations are scheduled at the end of coursework, and continuous assessments are conducted throughout the programme.

 

Master of Social Sciences Degree in Economics (MSSc): 

Time Duration is two years.

The coursework is expected to start in January each year and end in December. Examinations are scheduled at the end of coursework, and continuous assessments are conducted throughout the programme. Another year is allocated for the research.
9. Evaluation Procedure: 

Master of Arts Degree in Economics (MA):

The assessment structure is based on examinations (80%)  and assignments (20%).

 

Master of Social Sciences Degree in Economics (MSSc): 

The assessment structure for the coursework is based on examinations (80%) and assignments (20%). The thesis is evaluated by two examiners. Additionally, research is reviewed by two reviewers continuously.

1. Introduction: 

Department of History is a pioneering department of University of Kelaniya and one of the first departments of the Faculty. This programme was initiated in late 1990s as one of the pioneering Post Graduate programmes of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The curriculum for this course focus mainly on history, history of thought and sources pertaining to History of Sri Lanka, history of thought in ancient India and main forces of European Politics in modern era. The programme would enable the learners to engage in further research while gaining an in depth knowledge on the selected areas of studies. 

 

2. Entry Qualifications: 

Master of Arts in History  

Should  possess  a  Bachelor's  Degree  (General/Special)  from  a  recognized  Un iversity in  History or relevant subject area or any other academic or professional qualifications acceptable to the Senate of the University of Kelaniya. 

Master of Social Sciences in History 

Should possess Bachelor's Degree (Special with a Class) from a recognized University in History or any other academic or professional qualifications acceptable to the Senate of the University of Kelaniya.

5. Syllabus:

  • HIST 53015 - Theoretical and Institutional Development in Politics of Sri Lanka, up to 1600 AC
  • Introductory survey of political theories in Asia; state formation and evolution of kingship in Sri Lanka as depicted in primary sources; Indian and Buddhist ideologies/concepts which influenced the politics and legitimacy of power; the limits of political authority; political and administrative institutions pertaining to the central, provincial and local government; judiciary; military organization.
  • HIST 53025 - Socio-economic, Religious and Cultural Development in Sri Lanka, up to 1600 AC 
  • Introductory survey of Sri Lankan society in pre-historic period; early settlements; economic organization with special reference to agriculture, irrigation system, land tenure and internal and external trade; evolution of the social organization; the advent and spread of Buddhism; development of Theravada and Mahayana schools; origin and evolution of the Buddhist Sangha and monastic administration; Hinduism and other religions; art and architecture; education; women and society. 
  • HIST 53035 - Political and Socio-economic Development in Modern Sri Lanka,  from 1600 to 1948 AC 
  • Political, economic and social conditions of Sri Lanka at the advent of European powers; origin, development and downfall of the Kandyan Kingdom; impact of colonial ideologies and economic and political interests of the Portuguese and the Dutch and their policies; social and economic changes under the British with special reference to plantation economy, emergence of the middle class and subsistence agriculture; religious and cultural revival during the late 19th century; education, constitutional development and national movement; The grant of independence. 
  • HIST 53045 - Main Forces of Modern Europe, from 1760 to 1989 AC 
  • Introduction to early modern Europe; Industrial Revolution; French Revolution; Napoleon Bonaparte; the Vienna Congress; unification movements in Germany and Italy; Russia and France during the second half of the 19th century; Nationalism and Liberalism; first world war; Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet Union; Europe between the two world wars; second world war; United Nations Organization; Cold War. 
  • HIST 53055 - Political and Economic Development in Independent Sri Lanka,  up to 2000 AC 
  • Political challenges faced by Sri Lanka immediately after the Independence; foreign policy and foreign relations of Sri Lanka; electoral politics; constitutional changes in 1972 and 1978; youth uprisings; communal politics; landmark developments in the economy. 
  • HIST 53065 - Evolution of Political Thought and Socio-Political Institutions in  Ancient India and China 
  • Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sources pertaining to Indian political thought and socio-political Institutions; Buddhist and Hindu concepts of state and kingship; state and government in India; provincial and local government in India; social institution in India; Influence of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism on Chinese political theory; evolution of sociopolitical institutions in ancient China.

 The objective is to create a Post Graduate holder who is well-versed in the historical sources, and who has a sound knowledge on main forces and trends of selected historical contexts.

MA in Mass Communication/MSSc in Mass Communication

Introduction

Established in 1973, the Department of Mass Communication (DMC) in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Kelaniya is the pioneer Department in Journalism and Communication studies in Sri Lanka.

The Department has been exploring various dimensions in Mass Communication for the past forty-seven years, including both academic and professional contributions to the national development in Sri Lanka. At present, the Department offers postgraduate programs in Mass Communication in the levels of Master of Arts (one year, by course work), Master of Social Sciences (two years, by course work with research component), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

The academic staff of the Department includes one Senior Professor, ten Senior Lecturers, three Lecturers, three probationary lecturers, and three Assistant Lecturers. Additionally, nearly twenty-five visiting lecturers contribute to the Department in broadening its academic, professional, and research capacities.
