Commencement of the Master of Medical Statistics degree program

 

The Board of Study in Multidisciplinary Studies of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, is introducing the first-ever Medical Statistics postgraduate degree program in Sri Lanka. Further details about the program are given below.

In general, medical statistics plays a crucial role in all aspects of healthcare delivery, from clinical practice and research to public health policy and decision-making. It provides the quantitative tools necessary for generating reliable evidence, optimizing patient care, and improving population health. The Master of Medical Statistics degree aims to provide practices of medical statistics in health care and related fields. It is specially designed to deliver a comprehensive understanding of the quantitative techniques in an applicable manner. The use of project-based learning and up-to-date software will allow students to develop essential skills in advanced evidence-based research and policymaking.

 

This program highly benefits health administrators, researchers (medical/pharmaceutical experiments designing and analysis), policymakers, and those pursuing careers in health administration and policy making.

 

Applications are invited from 01st March 2024, and the program commencement is scheduled for May 2024.

Master of Professional Finance (MPF)

 

 

Academic Year 2025

Currently, the finance sector in Sri Lanka is facing exceptional transformation towards modernization, liberalization, innovation, and integration with the global financial markets. The role of finance graduates with mastery knowledge in finance with cutting-edge technological exposure is an essential qualification to meet the realities of the modern market.  Given this context, the Department of Finance introduced the Master of Professional Finance (MPF) programme.

International collaboration

The students of the Master of Professional Finance Programme have an excellent opportunity to join and continue their degree in one of the world-recognized top-ranked universities. The students who successfully complete their Trimester I of the Master of Professional Finance Programme will be eligible to apply for admission with credit to the Master of Applied Finance Programme offered by the University of Waikato and their Trimester II and III can be completed at the University.

The University of Waikato is a public research university in Hamilton, New Zealand and the university stands proudly on the world stage as a provider of future-focused, international education and an active player in global research Placed 331st in the world and the top New Zealand university for research. The Master of Applied Finance offered by the Waikato Management School is a Triple Crown Accredited business school.

 

Objectives of the Programme

The objective of the MPF programme is to enhance the capacity of graduates’ professional qualifications to advance their knowledge in the areas of financial discipline, investigative skills, and other abilities that are relevant and enable them to convert into a different discipline/profession, forming the basis for academic advancement and enhancing the managerial, administrative and technological capacity.

Programme Outcomes/ Graduate Profile

In achieving the objectives, the Master of Professional Finance Degree programme intends to develop young executives capable of becoming future leaders. Thus, the holders of the Master of Professional Finance degree should be able to;

  1. Construct multiple knowledge modules by using the key areas of finance and investments in making financial decisions.
  2. Develop a value system by using tools and techniques in finance to stand out as a strong candidate in the competitive financial industry.
  • Create the right professional finance mindset to cater to the evolving business world.
  1. Demonstrate the practical managerial issues faced by modern financial service firms.
  2. Integrate multiple skills relevant to financial management, such as critical thinking, analytical skills, report writing, presentation, negotiation, networking, problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Entry qualifications

  1. A Bachelor’s degree, (a) including 30 credits in the area of finance or (b) with prior learning/work experience equivalent to 30 credits in the area of finance or
  2. A qualification acceptable to the senate of the University of Kelaniya in the subject area of finance equivalent to 1(a) or 1(b).

Master of Science in Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology (SLQF 10)

Master of Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology (SLQF 9)

 

Introduction 

Master of Science in Crop Protection and Plant Biotechnology is a full-time modular course conducted by the Department of Plant and Molecular Biology of the University of Kelaniya. This program has been designed to provide in-depth knowledge and appropriate skills in the field of crop protection and the application of molecular biological and biotechnological tools for the quality improvement of crops.

 

In addition to gaining knowledge and skills in molecular biology, plant biotechnology and crop protection, students will also have an opportunity to follow a business administration and entrepreneurship component to aid broadening of employability levels and expanding entrepreneurship opportunities in the fields of crop protection, agribusiness, and crop biotechnology. The course is enriched with professional development workshops.

 

Aim of the programme

The aim of the programme is to give an opportunity for the professionals of the fields of agribusiness, customs, food quality assurance, quarantine, food processing industries, pest and vector control and technical officers in the university/industry to improve their knowledge in modern biotechnological concepts, familiarize with the techniques and tools used in molecular biology, disease diagnosis and management and plant quality improvement. The programme also provides a stepping stone for the higher educational degrees.

 

Objectives of the programme

  • develop human resource with necessary knowledge and skills on crop protection, disease diagnosis, molecular biological techniques and plant biotechnology for quality improvement,
  • promote awareness of the modern biotechnological strategies for quality improvement and crop protection among decision makers and managers,
  • prepare applied plant pathologists and geneticists for translational research and for the development of the country,
  • encourage large scale entrepreneurs to use modern technology effectively for crop improvement and disease management, and
  • bridge the gap for entering advanced research degrees.

  1. B.Sc. (Honours/Special) degree (SLQF 6) in Botany/Plant Science/Applied Science/Food Science/Molecular Biology & Plant Biotechnology/Molecular Biology/Plant Biotechnology/Zoology/ Microbiology/ Chemistry (with biological science subjects),
  2. B.Sc. (Agric.)/ B.Sc. (Agricultural Technology and Management),
  3. B.Sc. (General) degree (SLQF 5) with Botany/Plant Science/Applied Sciences/Food Science/Molecular Biology & Plant Biotechnology /Molecular Biology/Biotechnology/ Zoology/ Microbiology/Food Science as a subject, or
  4. Any other equivalent qualification acceptable to the university.
